The Goethe-Institut Manila, in cooperation with The National Library, opened an exhibition entitled "Contemporary Picture Book Illustration in Germany" last June 15, 2009 at The National Library, T.M. Kalaw St., Manila. Ma'am Prudenciana Cruz, Director of The National Library, and Mr. Richard Künzel, Director of Goethe-Institut Manila, did the honors at the ribbon-cutting ceremonies. Also present were members of the INK (Illustrador ng Kabataan) who held workshops a few days earlier. The workshop outputs adorned the exhibit area.
If you look at the works associated with contemporary picture book illustration in Germany, as Mr. Künzel explained, one will readily see the obvious simplification of themes, the exaggeration and the surrealism. All these designed to open the eyes of children and adults alike.
