Elite XC: Destiny, Gina Carano vs. Julie Kedzie

Just a quick one, I know it's old (last year), but I finally saw the groundbreaking FIRST female Mixed-Martial Arts (MMA) on PPV over at Elite XC: Destiny on Solar Sports.

The three-round fight was between (predominantly) Muay Thai stylists Gina Carano and Julie Kedzie. That being said, as expected, it was more of a striker slugfest lacking much in the groundwork action department. Kedzie, who had included Brazilian jiujitsu in her training regimen, was the one with who tried to execute some takedowns. Carano stood her ground and was seldom taken to the mat, even pummeling Kedzie ground-and-pound style on several ocassions when Kedzie laid on her back. I won't tell you who won, you have to watch it yourself, but I could say Kedzie was knocked down in the second round.

It was groundbreaking, in a way, as former wrestler and Elite XC color commentator Bill Goldberg put it. Not really much of a surprise for an alpha male gorilla like me. I've dropped the "She fights like a man..." and "He's a shrimp..." phrases from my vocabulary having sparred  with and been beaten by girls and smaller adversaries in the gym at kendo. Yeah, that fact I don't and won't deny. The stronger one doesn't always win, neither does the faster one. It's usually, but not always, the one with better technique and the one who has put his / her heart and soul into it more who does win. Sometimes it's also part luck. I'd like to think it's a combination of all the above.

PS. Oh yeah, by the way, Carano is also "Crush" in American Gladiators, another show I watch (in addition to CSI, Mythbusters, the History Channel shows, Discovery shows, Discovery Travel and Living ink shows and the WWE). :D

UP@100: Capturing 100 UP moments

Bumped into this at Juned's blog (baratillo.net) and at CoksiBlue (ThisIsCoy.net). Interested? Submit na! :D (Note: visit and leave your photo and video links at the UP@100 coordinators blogs, not here. :D)

Along with a group of UP bloggers, we have come up with a special project for the UP Centennial Month this coming June. It’s called “UP@100: Capturing 100 UP Moments“ - It is a Music Video Project which will compile 100 photos and videos from participants consisting UP alumni and students. It aims to capture 100 unique UP moments from 100 different points of view in the past 100 years of the University’s existence.

We are inviting YOU to join us in this endeavor.

Mechanics: How to submit an entry

I. Who can participate:

1. Any University of the Philippines Alumni.
2. Any University of the Philippines student.

II. How to submit your photo or video:

1. A participant can submit at most two pictures of himself/herself (alone or otherwise) taken in UP or during a UP event OR a 15-sec video of the participant taken in UP or during a UP event.
2. Each entry should have the the following information:
   • Name
   • Student Number
   • Degree and Course
   • Two to five words describing the event (include the year the photo/video was taken)
   • If it’s a group photo, please indicate your position in the picture.
3. Entries could be submitted by doing at least one of the following:
   • Sending them with file (photo/video) attachments to up100@googlegroups.com, baratillocubao@gmail.com or coy.caballes@gmail.com.
   • Posting the photos on their blogs and leaving the URL as a comment on this official UP@100 post.
   • Uploading the video on a file sharing site and leaving the download link as a comment on this official UP@100 post.
4. Only ONE of the entries submitted per participant will be selected.
5. The deadline for submissions is on June 19, 2008. A day after the UP Centennial Anniversary (so that photos from the centennial celebration could be included).
6. The launch of the video will be on June 26, 2008 on all the organizers’ blogs.
7. A microsite will be created for the project where all (part of the 100 or not) the submitted photos & videos will be posted in sync with the video launch.

IMPORTANT: Remember that we are including 100 UNIQUE UP moments in the video. So rare finds will be the most likely to be chosen. (But I’m sure all our UP experiences are different so send lang ng send. Hehe.)

Masama kasi loob ko...

Bad trip. Naputol kasi sandals ko (in pic, top pair) sa Caliraya. Pumunta ako today sa SM to look for another cheap yet sturdy pair (about PhP200-250)... May sturdy ones pa, pero wala ng cheap (yes, barat ako masyado, pero tamad pumunta ng Quiapo o Divisoria, ung mga andun sa SM cost PhP850 to 1,200 a pair). Wala ng tulad nung akin dati, phinase out na yata. :( Sa sobrang inis ko bumili ako ng 3 pairs plastic WB sandals, (PhP210 -295 @). Tingnan natin kung tatagal.

Of course with matching efficascent oil and 2 Watsons elastic bandages for my ankles, para sa mga pilay ko. :D

After that, Harry stopped replying and his webcam was paused.

But Harry still hasn't signed out.

Queenie buzzed 2 times. Still no reply.

All of a sudden Harry's webcam was on again

It showed Harry, his head open, bleeding, his whole body full of cuts and open wounds.
Harry looked the same way he did when he was hit by a truck.

Queenie froze in shock.



All of a sudden Harry replied.



Harry-Pot: so hindi mo na ako mahal?


Harry signed out. Queenie's computer at SEAMO-Innotech turned off by itself.
Then Queenie's phone rang.




Queenie: Hello?
Jen: Queenie, bad news.
Queenie: Ha? Ano?
Jen: Si Deo.
Queenie: Ano nangyari kay Deo?!
Jen: Nasagasaan siya ng truck.
Queenie: (cries)
Jen: Hello? Queenie?
Queenie: Nasaan siya?
Jen: Nasa ********.
Queenie: Papunta na ko.
Jen: Ok.

Queenie went to ******** Hospital. Jen led her to Deo's hospital room.

Jen: I think kailangan muna kita iwanan dito.
Queenie: Yah. Thanks ah.


Jen left Queenie with Deo.




Queenie: Deo, wag ka mawala. Dati si Harry, ngayon ikaw. Wag naman o.


Queenie hears footsteps from outside. She turns around.
To her shock, she sees Harry standing there by the door. Queenie screamed.



Queenie lost her consciousness. When Queenie woke up, she was lying down on a hospital bed.


Queenie: Ano nangyari?
Jen: Hinimatay ka.
Queenie: Wow.
Jen: Akala nga namin kung ano na nangyari sayo e.
Queenie: Yeah. But, I think ready na ako umuwi.
Jen: Sige. Tawagin ko lang si doc.


Jen leaves.




Bloody Harry appears in front of Queenie.


Harry: Masaya ka na?
Queenie: Ano ba Harry?!
Harry: Kung hindi mo ako kaya mahalin, wala ka nang ibang mamahalin pa!
Queenie: Harry, patay ka na!
Harry: Pati si Deo!
Queenie: Wala kang kwenta!
Harry: (laughs)


Harry disappeared and Queenie started laughing like crazy.

When Jen returned with the doctor, they were both shocked to see Queenie, laughing, trying to hurt everyone she sees.

Since then, Queenie has lost her mind and got checked in a mental hospital. Queenie has never stopped laughing ever since. Harry has never forgiven Queenie for finding a new guy.



And Harry has promised that anyone who finds out about his story will suffer the same fate as Queenie...









... unless they pass the curse on to other people with the title "Ex Libris SCANDAL".

It ain't fun...

Okay... Now for some pain... I sprained my right foot during the PAARL seminar in Palawan. Nothing major nor anything to call home about. I used OFF lotion like efficascent oil and set the misplaced "ugat" back in its place. I then wrapped my foot in my bandana.

So a week later I thought everything was okay, and my right foot was healing fine. This week I joined the SLIS faculty and staff for the annual SLIS Faculty Seminar Workshop. Day one, okay. Day two, semi-disaster. After a dip in the pool we made our way back to the rooms. I decided to take pics of the koi in the koi pond... Stupid me slipped sideways on the grassy elevation which ringed the pond. I sprained my left foot.

Good thing I brought along an elastic bandage, my Palawan experience greatly affected how I now pack my stuff for travel. So it's okay, I favored my left foot for the day. But no koi pics anymore. I didn't want to risk it.

Day three, disaster. The morning before we were supposed to head for home, the others of the entourage took a dip in the Lagos del Sol pool. I decided to skip that and just follow after an hour for pics. On my way down the stone brick pathway steps to the lakeside, I saw Ate Elvie, Michael, Nats, Dean Faderon and the others already making their way back up the hillside steps. Stupid me slipped on a loose stone brick on one of the steps. I re-sprained my right  foot.

My right foot twisted in a bad way when it got caught between the loose brick and another thick brick of the stone pathway. When the pain shot through my foot, knee-jerk instinct told me to jump up and sideways off the pathway onto the grass to wiggle my foot free. Michael and Ate Elvie saw it unfold from afar. Later Michael told me he said something like, "Ay, ba't si Sir tumatalon?" Ate Elvie, who was also in Palawan, said something like, "Hindi tumatalon yun, mukhang napilayan na naman.

They caught up with me. So there they were, laughing their asses off and looking over me while I was writhing in pain from two sprained ankles. Ate Elvie and Michael even took pics. O_o;;

So I had to snip my elastic bandage in half to be able to wrap both of my ankles in the ole OFF-lotion-as-efficascent-oil and reset-ugats-back-to-their-proper-places routine. It ain't fun. :(

Anyway, here are a couple of pics of a toy dog that caught my eye earlier in the week before I left for Lagos del Sol in Caliraya. He was roaming the tiangge area for hours, catching everyone's eye, at the Cash and Carry ground floor. The tinderas thought it a good marketing ploy for the toy. Seems to have worked.
