Things I learned while living alone...

This is my third week of living alone here in Quezon City. It has been quite an eye-opener for me. Circumstances have brought about this situation that I won't elaborate on. Suffice to say that I get to rest a whole lot more and have more time on my hands for work. Anyway, it's a crash course on life. Maybe it's applicable to just me, maybe to some of you out there too. Here's my list.

1. Living alone makes me thin.

Yup, moved down a belt notch since moving. Since I don't cook, I buy food. I found that I've limited myself to one serving of rice and viand. O_o;;

2. Living alone makes me spend less.

So far, I think this is true. I'll know for sure in about two months time.

3. It's a bitch to ferry your dirty laundry from one side of the metropolis to the other.

Yup, I have them laundered now or wash them here in QC. Perish the thought that I get held up and all I could fork over is a bag of soiled undies. O_o;; I'm now fwends with the laundry gurls across the street.

4. Walking is zen... Biking is zen... Ikot is zen...

Used to do these in college. Nice rediscovery. Bought a foldable bike to ferry myself around campus. But...

5. No matter how invincible you think you are, a storm, is a storm, is a storm.

No amount of raincoat and umbrella protection while riding a bike with small wheels in the rain will keep you dry. I got soaked, drenched, got sick and eventually missed classes. Related to this...

6. Being alone while sick is a bitch.

Waking up with a fever staring at an unfamiliar ceiling with no one to call on is a very rude awakening.

7. No matter how tough you think you are... No matter how much you love cold climates... Cold water in the morning is cold water in the morning.

I now heat my bath water. O_o;;

8. I can live without cable. But I can't live without a net connection and cellphones.

Related to this, I used to think that a tech person is only as good as his gear. Now I think a tech person is only as productive as his connectivity. It was a shock to see how reliant I was on the net. My temporary connection was via 3G using a Smart LG phone. In fairness it's a good back up. But it's a bit slow. Couldn't update the SLIS websites, couldn't access my email properly, couldn't plurk, couldn't multiply, couldn't reply to SLIS review questions, couldn't access my grades and student submissions, yada-yada-yada. Bayantel only got connected today and I'm making up for lost time. Also, I think I spent too much on load these past 2 weeks. Seems a cabled net connection is still cheaper for me.

9. Distances are deceiving. And a smaller bike wheel means more pedalling.

The japanese foldable bike I bought in Greenhills had small wheels and didn't have gears. It's nice for flat surfaces but damn tough on uphill climbs of the smallest of angles. A week later, the Cycleshack stores in SM Southmall suddenly had a delivery of an updated version of the bike. It now cost a bit more but now had gears! Damn... I'm looking at those "green" electric bikes  (smart bikes) now. They travel 50kms on an 8hr charge with pedalling as an option when the juice runs out. Didn't expect KNL to be so far from the Main Lib.

10. Things change...

My mind is stuck in the 90s. I instinctively almost paid P1.25 for Ikot fare. Jeez, it's now P7.00? It used to be P1.00 before it became P1.25, then P1.50, then P2.00. etc. etc. Bus ride to Las Pinas? It used to be P14.00 for ordinary, P21.00 for aircon. Now the aircon buses charge P68.00 to P70.00. Things change.

11. Lastly, you can count on your friends... Sorta...

When I was incapacitated Ate Rhina called and texted to check up on me. So did my landlady Ma'am Mae. So did the LISSA, FLIPP and LIS16x guys. Nearby neighbor Jen thought of me... I think...

"Sir, actually dadalhan ko sana kayo ng dinner kaso hindi ko alam yung papunta sa inyo.
Tsaka natatakot me kasi may napatay dyan nung isang araw."

Quite comforting...

I'll live. O_o;;

No, make that...

12. I'll live. ^_^

So maybe...

It's about time to share them.
I've been bombarded with these for the past month.
Seems everyone's in lababo. But I won't name names.
I'll just share with you the quotes that have
found their way into my phone's inbox.

Maybe you'll find one which moves you.
Enjoy (or be annoyed, whichever comes first).

Note: I obviously have a lot on my mind.
Parang LSS, I have to get these out of my head by humming the songs.
And at the same time make room in my inbox.

PS: Kung may orig dito msg me, para malagyan ng pangalan.
Inassume ko lang na puro fwded sya.
*sigh* I miss the ascii teddy bears of years gone by. O_o;;

It's hard to assume your position on somebody's life.
You might be expecting too much. Something far from reality.
So learn to weigh the situation, know your stand and keep things in balance.
'Cause the hardest to deal with, is failure, and the hardest to endure is pain.

The most powerful monosyllabic ten word phrase goes like this..

"If it is to be, it is up to me."

Der was

"kami na ni rabbit, ang bagal m0 kc!

"just bcoz sumthin is gud doesnt mean we shud pursue it ryt n0w..

we hav to remember dat,
d ryt thing at d wrong tym is still d wrong thing.."

Do you know what's the mark of people worth keeping for the rest of your life?
It's when you become impossible to deal with,

yet they stay.

"Kahit kelan walang maling desisy0n.
Nagiging mali lamang ang isang desisyon kung hindi ito npaninindigan."
-Bob Ong

It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more that our abilities.
-J.K. Rowling

Wen we find someone whose weirdness is compatible w/ ours,
we join up w/ them & fall in2 mutually satisfying weirdness --

"once the sun goes down, another day is gone.

"Para siyang isang batang nagtapon ng diamante para pumulot ng isang bato."
-Blumentrit to Rizal

Love is like a lost object.If u search 2 hard, u w0nt find it.
But f u jst forget about it momentarily..

it wiL show up in d most unexpected way...ü

There are just certain things in life that are better off unknown.
Things you wish you never asked, never saw, never heard and sometimes never even felt..

"if you don't act foolish while you are young,
you won't have anything to smile about when you get older"

I realized that being a teacher is incomparable.

As we care for our students,

We learn how to cover our sorrow with a smile

We learn how to stay vigorous despite all the tasks we endure

We learn how to give hope eventhough our's
is unclearly seen

We learn how to give strength even at times that we are weak...

Nobody would know what kind of life a teacher has....

Unless they become one.ü

My Name According to Almighty Google

My life according to Google, got it from Dan, Jen and Marj.

Instructions

Type in the following and choose the choice (which appears first and makes sense, but doesn't necessarily have a connection with you - well, except your name's in it) from the list provided by Google.

Type in the Google search box  "(your name) xxx" where xxx equals:
  1. needs
  2. looks
  3. loves
  4. says
  5. does
  6. hates
  7. goes
  8. is
  9. wishes
  10. wants

Almighty google gave me...
  1. Motivation? Igor needs motivation? Read up!

    hmmm...

  2. Igor looks very unusual, as he’s dressed up in a very sharp suit, but he looks like an emotional train wreck.

    hmmm... (again..)

  3. Igor loves kitties
Igor loves to be held and to cuddle like the sweet teddy bear he resembles.

hmmm... I do belong to a band called bipolarbears...

  4. "...I am a man with the belief that things happen for a reason," Igor says coolly, in an dialect that you can barley understand...

    Rock on!

  5. At the present time Igor does not run under Linux.

    Really? My laptop runs Linpus...

  6. Igor hates the new iPhone. He really does.
Igor hates to throw anything away.

I don't think the first is true since I have no basis. The second one is true, I'm a packrat.

  7. A Severe Case of Cannes Envy and Igor Goes to the Movies

    Yeah! :D

  8. Prince Igor (Russian: Князь Игорь, Knyaz' Igor) is an opera by Alexander Borodin, written in four acts with a prologue.
"Igor" is an animated comedy that brings a new twist to the classic monster genre.

I knew these would make an appearance...

  9. Igor Wishes Strong Health and Love to All His Fans in the New Year ...

True... Health and love to you all. :D

  10. IGOR wants to do his own bidding...

    W00t!!! True!

Note: My life according to Google sucks... Results were weird. A least I found out there's a software named Igor, a youtube vid with Igor something Lucas, some posts about MMA great Igor Vovchanchyn, Prince Igor the opera, and A LOT about IGOR the movie.

My Secret

I told my secret to my friend,
My friend told all her friends.
Her friends told all of their own friends,
Those other friends told friends…

It ain’t a f@&$#ng secret anymore!

(a very old poem, ca. 1992, for CW poetry class)

Pasta

I have good teeth.

Yup, was texting Jen and she said "WEH!". Inggit daw. Has been 35 years and no problems. No cavities, no drilling, no pulling, no chipping, no braces. Should have gotten braces for the lower tooth that overlapped another one but didn't. "Lalaki ka naman,"  they said when I was young. So no braces.

So there, 35 years without problems. Until I hit 36.

Neglected my teeth the past year, wasn't able to go to the dentist for cleaning. Ayun, madumi na sya when I had it cleaned yesterday by Dr. Tarriela at BF Phase 3. Calcar buildup, nicotine and coffee stains, etc. And now I have cavities starting.

I've always hated going to dentists. Parati akong pinapagalitan dahil sa lifestyle ko. Dr. Tarriela was different. I think she had a hard time with my teeth, but she was understanding. Sayang nga daw, after 35 years ngayon pa lang nagsisimula ang sira.

Two years ago, I had a hole starting on my front tooth. It was the size of a pin prick, too small to do anything about it. Now it's about the size of a pencil point. No other choice but to fill 'er up else the hole got bigger. Ngayon lang ko naka-relate sa sakit ng nagpapaayos ng ngipin, never had a drill touch the insides of my teeth. Ganun pala kasakit yun. Araguy~... Seems with my lifestyle (smoking, firebreathing, fire poi and all) I will have to go to the dentist twice as much as normal people with the nicotine and tar buildup. So that makes it every 3 months instead of every 6 months visits. I tend to brush my teeth too vigorously, I mow down toothbrushes a whole lot faster.. Good. I chew ice... Bad... Doc thought I opened beer bottles with my teeth because of the trauma, ice lang daw pala.

Slept through the whole night because of the pain of cleaning and drilling.
But now I can smile again. Hehehehe. The hole's been plugged up.

House Warming

Went to my friends' house in Pasig for a house warming which was a year late. Yup, they settled there last year, but all our skeds only gelled this year for a get-together. Same old culprits, my group of friends in publishing who hold sway on what we read in some popular printed monthlies (*cough* scantilly clad women and showbiz mags *cough* US-based manga *cough*). I won't post our pics here since we all want to relish our anonymity, editorial guys are like that (kuno). Hehehe. Nice to be able to see Cherry, Bambi and Olan, Art, Bebert and Donna, and Aris again after a long while. Still miss Cecil and Nick though...

Now supposedly there's a printed pic floating out there with me in a Harlock costume which they say I haven't discovered yet after all these years. Jeez, gotta find that. See, we play tricks on each other. Somehow wherever / whatever publication we find ourselves in, we tend to get content from each other. So we usually write for each other's publications and share contacts.

Of course with this "bond" comes the inevitable... we play practical jokes on each other. Practical jokes in web content, photos and articles range from photoshopping a third hand for a co-worker holding a magazine coming out of nowhere (only a few people saw that), pasting a co-worker's ID pic repeatedly in a gallery of contest entries ala Where's Wally (jeez, we have way too much free graphics layout time), using a lesser known nickname for a comic book sound effect, repeatedly linking a word in a website to a stupid pic of a co-worker or Friendster profile and inserting each others names in articles and fiction for no apparent reason.

Heck, I still do that. I still use my friends' names for major characters in things I write (see guys, I'm not the only one). For me it's a tribute, being able to immortalize your friends in web and print and graphics. (Yes, Marj, Jen, Dan, Chad and Iyra... Am still tempted by the possibilities of having scantily-clad women surrounding me while I work... but nah... Nothing beats scholarly pursuits... right? Right? O_o;; Agree with me, please, before I break down and cry.)

Anyway, my friend Cherry has a very sick sense of humor. She finally gave us our 2007 Christmas gifts (yup, 8 months late... Talk about very bad skeds for all of us. Mine was a knapsack I can use.. Thanks Cher!). And guess what... Imagine alpha-males having to lug around... in August... big Christmas gifts wrapped in pink Sarah ang Munting Princesah Christmas wrapper! Anyway, she also gave me a Maxim baller ID, which is weird since I quit playing basketball decades ago. O_o;; Another freebie! Heck, how come we don't get movie premiere invites anymore? Huh? Huh?

Birds of a same feather flock together...
It's such a sick, sick world.

A bit overwhelmed...

I actually intended to spend my whole birthday sleeping at home. Instead I found myself answering messages the whole day in front of the computer and on the phone. Love the fact that all my friends here and abroad, co-workers, former co-workers, and those who at one time or another were a part of my life took time to send a shoutout.

The old Questor and Anime-Club guys, DMP / 7seas grfx guys, BF Mariposa dudes, OFW Guardian / Empyrean Press peeps, Mendiola Bedans, FlipSpin Yoyoistas, ILS peeps, SLIS peeps, UPLISSA guys, UP Music Circle rickrollers, FLIPPers, LSAA alum, SLIS-SC peeps... Thank you. I am a bit overwhelmed.

Wasn't really keeping track till I realized the messages were coming from different parts of the metropolis as well as the whole world. I miss you guys, whether you're in Canada, the US, Bahrain, Dubai, Singapore, Japan, China, or just around the corner.

Web made it way much easier to reach me. Messages from my Plurk timeline, Google Talk, YM, Friendster, Facebook, Yahoogroups, Twitter were a bit hard to keep up with, but heck... 'Twas worth it. I'm a firm believer in the net and social networking. If this is the reason it was developed, being able to keep in touch, then I'll take it.

The day after my birthday, August 1, was okay. Surprised that Wee's and JM's reports had built-in birthday greetings. Hehehehe. Those made my day. :D Oh the wonders of technology.

What really caught me off guard was the cake from the UPLISSA monkeys, especially the story about the hard time they had explaining to the cake decorator that the name on the cake should be spelled "Gorilla". "Ma'am, pangalan ng babae po ba yung Gorilla?" O_o;; go figure. I told Marj-beybeh there wasn't any need for it, di nagpaawat. Ayun, you could have bought more gluesticks instead. Talked photography with Iya-bebe and Jay for a while too.

Then it was off for a LISSA Dinner and Dencio's at Trinoma with newest LISSA monkey Ivy Honey Lou and Bianca's friends Jhem and Gio. Ivy and Jhem charmed the pants out of(f) the waiters who asked for pictures to be taken with them. HABA NG MGA HAIR NYO! I can only imagine if only Iya was there too... They'd all be hovering around our table more with those 3 ladies around. :D

Thanks to Bianca for the "Mabuti ng sumuka, wag lang sumuko" pin... Quite reflects my phlosophy in life. Will be waiting for the shirts you'll be making. Bili ako XL or XXL nun. :D

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You all made this year very special for me.
