PAARL Poi Palawan

The PAARL (Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians) National Summer Conference Fellowship Dinner in Palawan was Hawaiian Luau-themed. So they asked me to bring my poi. Of course I flub my entry into a fountain with a tangle. O_o;; Thanks to Des for the vid.

Juned on Photoblogging

Am watching Juned's Photoblogging presentation on iBlog4 via http://www.justin.tv/janettetoral. :D

Tnx to Az of http://popazrael.multiply.com for asking for me via the Q & A. :D

Palawan PAARL Fellowship Night

Did some poi and fire-breathing, have to get the vid from Des. Lotsa games. Bunny and Ion of UP Main Lib, Tin and I got "drafted" for the Limbo Rock. I paired up with SLIS alumna Vivian Soriente of DLSU. She was my student in one of my MLS IT subjects many years back during my first teaching stint. For some unknown reason we were flexible enough to tie another pair for the win. O_o;; The years haven't been kind on our spines. Our backs still hurt.

Palawan Baker's Hill

Baker's Hill, a popular souvenir and pasyalan place in Palawan with lots of fiberglass statues. Bought trinkets for my mom and sister. Des and Tin bought pearls here, which I know nothing about. O_o;; May South Sea, Cultured, etc. They all look the same to me. :D I used the pink bedsheets for backdrops.

Palawan PAARL National Conference

Pics of conference sessions. "Information Literacy and Life-long Learning Initiatives: Librarians in the Frontline'' by Ma'am Fe Angela Verzosa, "New Information Networks: Web 2.0, Library 2.0, and Librarians 2.0" by Robert Romero, and "Information Commons: Creating New Library Spaces, enhancing access to digital sources and deskless reference model'' by Ma'am Sonia Gementiza. Also a pic with Robert and with Ma'am Marietta Molina of CEU, she knows my mom and dad way back during their CEU days.

Palawan Badjao Seafront

Tin, Des and I met up with Ma'am Vyva Aguirre for dinner the night before the conference. Ma'am Vyva was in town for a PGLL (Philippine Group of Law Librarians) conference. We made our way to the Badjao Seafront, a restaurant with seafood specialties. If you haven't noticed by now, yes, the UPSLIS faculty members love to eat... Just check my albums... :D I'm not much of a seafood guy but Badjao Seafront, an out of the way place surrounded by mangroves, was okay for me. The place was packed that night. By this time it dawned on us that we would be encountering a lot of people who were in Palawan for the Palarong Pambansa. No wonder we were greeted by a military band when we landed at the airport, seems there were athletes for the games on the plane we were on.

Palawan St. Ezekiel

We stayed at the conference site itself, the St. Ezekiel Moreno Spirituality and Development Center, run by the Recoletos sisters. Nice and cozy place. Aircon rooms, nice greens and flowers. Breathable air. :D (Remember that when you graduate and start picking seminars to attend). Took time to take pics of stuff... And... Yes... Some mix-ups occurred. Some boys were given odd numbered rooms, some girls were given even numbered rooms. My roomate Ion, Rye's boyfriend, and I were given room 111... As it turns out odd numbered rooms had pink stuff, even numbered rooms were blue. So we were assigned a PINK room! O_o;; Nanghihina kami... Pero okay lang. Since it's a Catholic place, strict time sked was observed... Prayers before meals, meditative silence, return your plates to the kitchen... A welcome change for me... Hi to Bunny of UP Main Lib, our mealmate. :D

Palawan Underground River

From the airport we took a van. One of the things we noticed in Palawan was that there were no taxis. Tour vans and tricycles are the main mode of transport. The ride to Sabang was bumpy. We had a stopover at the viewdeck first (pic 2), then the information office (pic 3 and 4) to get the permit to visit the Underground River. You have to take a motorized boat ride to the cave. Lots of ambulant (nope, they don't sells stuff) dogs on the beach pa rin. Bayawaks line the trail to the cave where you'll ride a smaller paddled boat. Life vests necessary for all boat rides, btw. Hard to take pics inside the cave, I needed to focus on the light source held by Tin, who was seated up front. The caves, carved inside mountains, were both fascinating and scary. The lamp Tin held was the only light source, if it goes out we would have been stuck in total darkness. The guides on the cave boats knew the route like the back of their hands. This, plus the eats at Tribe, made this trip all worthwhile. :D

Palawan Tribal Eats

Straight from the airport at around 9:30am, Tin, Des and I went straight to the Underground River in Sabang. We knew we'd have very little time to see the sights so we made use of our early arrival and booked a Topstar Tours van for the hour and a half bumpy ride. We arrived around noon so we were hungry. We made our way to Tribe, a restaurant on the shore before the boat ride to the Underground River. We met George, the 6-month old monkey. He likes me but hates Des and girls in general, he scratches their hands when they try to pet him. He took a liking to my beads and DSLR and started chewing on both of them when I got too near. Des hates the fact that the strap around his waist is too tight. Lots of healthy dogs on the beach, too. These guys were accustomed to people already and were quite docile. We ordered the house specialties: Stingray in Coconut Milk, Adobong Wild Boar and Crabs. Heaven! Drop by this place if you're in Palawan! It took us an hour and a half and we still weren't able to finish it. Which probably explains the fat dogs sauntering up to us asking for handouts. O_o;;

Palawan Plane Ride

Just arrived from my trip to Puerto Princesa, Palawan with Des and Tin. We attended the Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians (PAARL) National Summer Conference on Finding the Library's Place in the 2.0 Environment. The conference was from April 23 to 25, but we got in a day early to take in the sights (see next albums). First pic is arrival. Had a very very bad headache due to lack of sleep since I had apprehensions for this, my first plane ride, so I only took a few pics. The others are for the trip home with Robert Romero, another UPSLIS Alum who was one of the speakers. The guy in the cap and green shirt is a line cutter. Stupid asshole. The sky pics are above cloud photos through the PAL plane window when I was able to get a window seat on the way home. The popping of the ears every so often from 9,000 to 33,000 feet was more bearable on the way home. It was grueling the first time.

Cy Sablay Kendo

Funny how things line up. Out of the blue Cy asked me where to buy bokkens and shinai when we were at the LISSA Summer Swim. Seems he's interested in swordplay having talked to Tyran and seen a kendo club in UP years ago. Well, guess what, Tyran was my kohai and I was part of that kendo club in UP years ago, the Yuukan Kendo Club (an unrecognized informal club). Tyran and I were the last two guys of the club, I closed it down since I ran out of things to teach Tyran. I gave Cy one of my old shinai (bamboo swords) so he could practice. As it turns out, Liz also practiced Haedong Kumdo, a korean art similar to Japanese Kendo. Finally, after years, I found out what subtle difference there was between kendo and kumdo in my talk with Liz. Seems they can change grips from right over left to left over right, which we didn't do in kendo. With the guys graduating and CY going back to the province, I think we'll set up an SLIS informal meet a year from now where we can beat each other senseless. :D I'll ask Tyran if he wants to come. That's Cy's sablay and Janny sleeping it off from thesis work, btw. *sigh* I'm out of practice, tried a swing at the tambayan pillow and missed. I hit the bulletin board. The sound shocked the guys at the Flipp tambayan, me thinks. Soweee. O_o;;

DB figs

These always sit on my table or pc workstation wherever I work. Been jumping with me from workplace to workplace for years. Took them home from UP, where they sit on my faculty room table, last March to clean 'em up.

John and Abie 08

John and Abie are in town from Japan for a brief stay. Went to Pancake House and Starbucks BF Paranaque. John playing around with my cam.

Wading in Water

This post is long overdue, but I have to write it down.

Yesterday we buried my Uncle Oben, Atty. Ruben German Cabbab of the DPWH. He died last Saturday, April 12, from a myocardial infarction. Heart-related death, much like what happened to my Dad, my grandpa, my grandma and my aunt. My other uncle had also suffered from a stroke a while back. Must run in the family...  (Dean Faderon keeps telling me not to think of it that way but I just can't help it.)

Last Saturday was an emotional roller coaster. I was with the LISSA peeps at the overnight Summer Swim when I got the text from my mom at 5 am saying that my uncle had suffered from a cardiac arrest and was being revived at the St. Luke's Medical Center. I decided to catch some zzzz's before the dispersal at 6am thinking I'll need all the rest I could get and that he would be alright by the time I got there.

I passed by for some breakfast pancakes for my relatives watching over my uncle at St. Lukes. My 2 aunts were already there, my dad's sister Tita Cynch and my uncle's wife Tita Unti. I was wondering why they were talking to the nurses at the nurse station and not staying at my uncle's bedside. As it turned out I wasn't sent the text message that my uncle had already died.

It took me some time to put two and two together. It only sunk in at around 9am when we were already at the billing department waiting for the funeral parlor to pick up my uncle's body. Stayed up all night so I was dozing on and off the whole ordeal. My aunts were facilitating health card claims so I was of no help with that since I'm bad with paperwork and billing.

Low point of the emotional roller coaster was having to identify my uncle's body for transport from St. Luke's to Funeraria Paz. I've never been to the bowels of hospitals and the backrooms of funeral parlors. That changed that day.
 The Hallway of the Morgue in St. Lukes

I've never done that before, not even for my Dad. Someone else always did the identification of relatives. It was my turn. I always thought those CSI-type body identifying scenes on TV were unreal. I was wrong. It really is an emotional experience.

It was a dizzying maze to the morgue, I won't be able to retrace my steps even if you ask me to. Cadavers are transported out back and not via the main halls of  the hospital. Maybe so as not to freak out other hospital denizens.

After seeing my uncle off out back, the guard escorted me through the maze again so I could go out front to the car and meet up with my aunts at Funeraria Paz. That's when I broke down. My face was a mess even before I got to the parking lot.

At Funeraria Paz it was all paperwork. Life plans, GSIS, SSS, health cards, coverage, chapel assignments, all that stuff. Through all this I saw how strong-willed my
Tita Unti was, I couldn't even imagine what was running through her mind. Tita Cynch is Tita Cynch, always on top of things. We were also taken into a backroom to pick a coffin for my uncle. Through all this and the wake Tita Unti kept bugging me to stop smoking too. Gotta love her for that.

My uncle was instrumental at the hospital the day I was born. He was there during my first days on this earth, it's only fitting that I was there at the hospital on his last day.

I always say that I inherited diplomacy from my mom and chalk talk from my dad. At the wake people were saying I looked like my dad (probably freaky to see a young version of someone you've known for decades). My mom says I inherited my dad's laugh. I could probably add that I inherited my uncle's sick sense of humor.

I was born a couple of months before Martial Law was declared. It was a stormy week. My mom gave birth to me in UST Hospital. Then, until now, España always flooded after the slightest of downpours. Like most single uncles and aunts, Uncle Oben was the one who ferried mommy and baby supplies, laundry, food, etc. to and from the hospital. I should know, I did that too.. Twice already... He always told the story of how he had to wade through murky chest-deep floodwaters carrying bundles over his head just to reach the hospital. This while playing Frogger with all sorts of identifiable and unidentifiable floating objects as well as avoiding being sucked into manholes. There was trash, the paddling dog, the swimming rat and undescribables galore.

After animatedly illustrating how he waded through water he would always punctuate his story with "Kung alam mo lang kung anong hirap ang dinanas ko nung pinanganak ka!" This much to my mom's chagrin. Me? I just rolled with it. And what did my uncle get in return? He got to be my ninong.

What pains me the most is that I'll never get to hear that story ever again the way it should be told.

read: if you want to know me. my 10 random facts. (got tagged by kate and criscelle)

From kate and criscelle.

1. Each blogger starts with ten random facts/habits about themselves.
2. Bloggers that are tagged need to write on their own blog about their ten things and post these rules.
3. At the end of your blog, you need to choose ten people to get tagged and list their names.
4. Don't forget to leave them a comment telling them they're tagged, and to read your answers.

1. I do weird things and collect weird stuff.
Just check my vids and photos.

2. I have two tattoos.
And I plan to get more. I want an Ex Libris on one arm and an Ex Machina on the other one.

3. I'm in the comics lettering and retouch industry too.
The barkada business... Been doing it for some time now. Just don't be shocked as to what I work/worked on... Like this. It's a living. I've got a lot more uncredited stuff floating around...
Kaya yung mga manga na dinadownload nyo.... Tingnan nyo muna, baka kasama ako dun... Bilhin nyo naman yung totoo para di naman kami malugi. O_o;;

4. I once did a couple of voice-overs for 2 anime convention commercial spots on GMA 7.
I don't have copies, though. :( Sayang... If anyone has a copy, enge naman.

5. I have never flown in an airplane...
But that will change this April 22 when I go to Palawan.

6. I'm a deist...
I believe it's faith and not religion which is important. I believe we're all worshiping the same God but call him different names. I hate self-righteous tirades that go "I am right, you are wrong and if you don't agree with me you will not be saved..." Which is why I don't like going to any church.

7. I'm a cheap, easily bored, pack rat...
It's related to #8 so read on.

8. I love retro tech as well steampunk and cyberpunk themes.
This also relates to my Ex Machina tattoo answer above. I believe in the power of old stuff. Hey, they're tried and tested. So any cheap computer and tech junk I can revive, I eventually get and dismantle... Then stock them in my room for 5 years. O_o;;

9. All my ex-girlfriends are from UP, SLIS, board-passers and are librarians.
But I have a Ross Geller syndrome. O_o;;

10. I've been on hypertension medication for maaaaaany years.
Yup... My blood pressure rose at my heaviest weight and it wouldn't go down. So I had to be given a maintenance dose to lower it. If I stop I'll get high blood pressure again, even though I've lost some weight already.

Wala na akong maisip....

Ric Flair retires

So it's the soap opera for men, and I must admit I was teary-eyed... Why? "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair, WWE Hall of Fame inductee, has retired from active in-ring wrestling. Sure he may be back for ocassional appearances and other storylines and stuff, but it won't be the same. He's been wrestling for a long time and I've watched a lot of his matches growing up. Imagine, he has been wrestling longer than my age in years.

I just watched his farewell address on RAW, and man it was moving. It's up there in emotion with the Eddie Guerero tribute. I think Flair didn't know that people were going to join him in the ring, he probably thought it was a one-man address. But no...

Triple H started the ball rolling and soon everyone who's ever teamed-up with him and is really close to his heart joined him in the ring. Four Horsemen, Batista, Ricky Steamboat, John Cena, Shawn Michaels, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, a virtual who's who in wrestling past and present. Then the locker room emptied and, whether face or heel, the wrestlers led the whole stadium in a "Thank You Ric" chant.

It's a rare wrestling tv spectacle to see wrestlers out of character like Edge without the smirk, JBL and Randy Orton smiling and The Big Show spontaneously showing his gentle giant side. A fitting tribute to "The Stylin', profilin', limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheelin' n' dealin' son of a gun!"

Thank You, Ric. We'll miss the "WOOOOOOOOOOOO!"s.

Ex Libris: End of March

Init? Hilo? High Blood?

Siguro dahil na-trapik ako sa C5-Pasig-Makati area for 3hrs at nearly 5pm na ako nakadating sa SLIS. At grabe pa init. Kahit may aircon. I've been through worse. Natulog ako with an icepack on my head. Kaya ngayon lang online.
