The University of the Philippines Library and Information Science
Students' Association (UP LISSA) will be celebrating its 45th
anniversary this year!

In line with this, we are cordially inviting all UP LISSA members
(advisers, alumni and students) to join us as we celebrate a Green
Party: UP LISSA at 45.  It will be held on the 29th of September 2007
(Saturday), 5-9 PM at the Alumni Cafe, UP Diliman.

Please confirm your attendance on or before the 27th (Thursday).
Registration Fee is only PhP 200.  Come in smart casual attire with a
touch of green.

Life's Like That

I was hoping (and still am) that this won't turn into a Librarian's Despedida Blog, but heck, life's just like that... About 2 or 3 of my posts per year are devoted to a leaving friend or a visiting / returning one. This one is about Harriet.

Harriet, a librarian, has already left for Dubai to work as an archivist. We held a despedida for her last September 19 at A Veneto in Quezon City. Harriet joins my other librarian hardbound friends Abbie and Jean who are already working there. My other librarian kumpares and kumares are scattered across the globe, the most being the kuyukots in the US, Canada and New Zealand.

It's weird. I nonchalantly dealt with diaspora daily in my old work at the OFW Guardian. But when it's a friend who's leaving, it takes on a whole new meaning. Good luck, Harriet, and God bless.

Pinoy Biblioblogosphere

I wore a shirt that read:

"Ang isip,
tulad ng aklat,
ay mainam kung bukas."
It's the UPLSAA shirt. And the message on it was very appropriate for the afternoon.

Von, Zarah, Juned, Arnold, Charles and Igor all came together for Pinoy Biblioblogosphere.

It's all about building a network with resources devoted to reading materials, reviews, libraries, librarianship and librarians. A lot of ideas were tossed around and we all agree that it's time for something like this. It's definitely feasible.

This is also a call for pinoy librarians to start writing about the profession. We all have a lot of ideas and stories to tell and it's time to start now. As Von puts it, and we agree with him, no one is going to write about the profession except us.

Related to that, ahehehe, it was mentioned that me, Igor the gorilla, being a gorilla-of-all-trades, has a blog that is a blog-of-all-trades. O_o;; Ahehehe... The gorilla is just like that: librarianship, linux, pc hardware, web, retro and weird computing, dreams, theater, fire and skill toys, stuffed toys, graphics, manga, comics and what-not. But it had me thinking on the way home. Maybe it's time for a "re-focusing", as Arnold puts it, since I've chosen to devote a majority of my life and time to LIS again. That doesn't mean I'm abandoning the other things that make Igor into the gorilla and http://gokitomo.com into Monkeywrench. So just expect a blog revamp / redesign (Monkeywrench 2.2? 3.0?) for http://gokitomo.com to address this focusing. And since I frequently cross-post at "The Multiplying Gorilla" at Multiply.com and "Igor and Other Stuff" at Vox.com, I'll probably keep those for aggregated posts.O_o;;

Sidenote: I had a dream about this last year. A group was talking to me about my blog content and tags. Though I don't remember the faces of the people in my dream, I think this may be related to that dream. O_o;;
