SLIS Ink

The tattoo on my left arm needs retouching... It has faded after more than a decade. The blood red on the heart is.. well... nearly gone? The barbed wire black is blurred.... FYI, this was done by the frat brother of one of my old students. They had a Tau Gamma Phi fraternity tattoo booth at the UP Fair more than a decade ago... "Sir, pa-tattoo kayo?" Why the hell not... I'll try anything once...


I've been searching for a good tattoo parlor for the past 2 months for the retouching. Little did I know there was one near our village... Beside a comp shop. O_o;; I'll probably have it done next week. Maybe a new one for the right arm... Who knows? :D (I watch too much LA Ink and Miami Ink...)

DH Post-Processed Portraits

A month ago, gw3n posted a link on her multiply blog (http://amiagnecimme.multiply.com/photos/album/28/DH_Photoshop_Technique..) about a Dave Hill post processing technique over at Flickr's Strobist group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157594577686705/). I've been itching to try it yet never had the time. Well, tried it this morning with some tweaks. It looks good on some yet horrible on others, especially outdoor and brightly-lit shots. Got some old photos (I think they're all in my past albums here) and high-pass filtered, enhanced and bg'ed like crazy. Usually I only resize and occasionally crop so this is experimental for me (I usually have the grfx guys at the mag do it). Puro madalian lang. Hirap magbura ng imperfections. :D Did some in 2 while others in 3 passes hence the multiple files. It generates too much skin tone noise on the files for my tastes.

Photo contest on "The Changing Face of the Earth"

UNESCO’s Earth Sciences Programme is running a photo contest on the theme of The Changing Face of the Earth, to raise awareness among youth of the state of the planet. There are several cameras and 40 book prizes to be won. Entries close on 30 June 2008.

Contestants may enter in one of the two following categories:

• 15-20 year olds and 
• contestants aged 21 years and over.

Each contestant is invited to submit a single colour photo depicting her or his personal testimony to the Earth’s rapidly changing landscape in a positive or negative way. The photo should illustrate one of the ten themes from the International Year of Planet Earth (see list below). Photos may portray rural or urban scenes and should depict changes to the landscape caused by natural phenomena or resulting from human intervention.

The Prizes

Each of the winning contestants in each category will receive a copy of two UNESCO books in English or French, depending on their preference: Explaining the Earth and The Changing Face of the Earth.

Explaining the Earth depicts our planet’s place in the Universe and in our Solar System, the Earth’s structure, plate tectonics, the role of the atmosphere and hydrosphere, the formation of reliefs, the ice ages and natural hazards.

The Changing Face of the Earth traces continental shift since the Pangaea, a single supercontinent, began breaking up 250 million yeas ago, via 10 maps.

In addition, the best entries in each category will win a camera. The names of the winning contestants will be announced in the October 2008 issue of A World of Science and on UNESCO’s science portal.

Choose one of the following ten themes for your photo

• Soil – Earth's living skin, Planet Earth in our hands
• Groundwater – towards sustainable use
• Hazards – minimizing risk, maximizing awards
• Earth and health – building a safer environment
• Climate change – the ‘stone tape’
• Resource issues – towards sustainable use
• Megacities – going deeper, building safer
• Deep Earth – from crust to core
• Ocean – abyss of time
• Earth and life – the origins of diversity

Ex Libris: My Sacrifice

Masakit na ang ulo ni Harry. Masakit na rin ang mata. One last hitch... One last stumbling block... Pilit nyang kinokompute ang percentage ng receivables ng National Chapter ng Ex Libris mula sa UP Ex Libris na natamo pa nila dalawang taon na ang nakalilipas. Namana nya lang ito. Ngayon mamamana na rin ni Queenie. Kahit ma-tapyasan man lang ng kaonti, para sana hindi na masyadong mamroblema ang Lady Chancellor. Para sana iba na ang mapagtuunan ng pansin ng confraternity. Pinisil ni Queenie ang kanyang kamay habang may kunot sa noo na nagpapakita ng pag-aalala sa kasama.

"Gusto mo," panimula ni Queenie, na kitang-kita ang concern, "Kami na ang bahala diyan? Para di ka na maabala sa thesis mo?"

"Hindi," tugon ni Harry, sabay ngiti sa kasama, "Kaya pa."

Diliman Graffiti

DSLR Drive-by: Documenting Diliman Graffiti. Got a text msg from a former officemate saying that the senior artist of the old Questor office, Jess Matro, passed away after lingering illnesses. I was supposed to be early for the UPLSAA Web 2.0 lecture at the SLIS, but I had to clear my head. I did three passes around UP Diliman, DSLR (Canon 400D sometimes on auto, sometimes manual) in one hand, steering wheel in the other. Through the windshield and through the window shots so some didn't turn out well. Wish I had the 450D with live view. I plan to do this on foot in the future. This is for you, Bos Jess.
