My Mind is Mush

It all started months ago when I wanted to watch Battle Royale 1 and Battle Royale 2 again after watching Grindhouse: Death Proof and Planet Terror (Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez rock). I was craving for more gore and horror on the scale of Kill Bill I and 2, Ichi the Killer (Koroshiya 1) and Lik Wong (aka Riki-Oh or The Story of Ricky). Or for something memorable on the cinematic plus audio scale like Desperado, The Crow, 300 and Neon Genesis Evangelion (Shin Seiki Evangelion). (All sick, I know, but hey, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger... Just vomit more.)

So I went on a reserve-time-to-watch "things that catch my fancy" + get-rid-of-backlogs mode since June, but actually only got most of the chance last November and the Christmas break. Here's the list I've watched to this day. Note: a lot of it make Kill Bill seem for wimps. Other common themes would be that behind it all, it's all about power.

Machine Girl (Kataude Mashin Gâru)
I found this via Noel's review and watched it a bit earlier than the others. Revenge flick with girl-amputee getting battle modifications for severed limbs. Arterial spray galore whether it be chainsaws or blades.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Shin Seiki Evangelion)
Hideaki Anno's psycho-theo-sociological commentary which messes with your brain and makes you review all your Psych 101 notes. All the characters are broken. (Fave as my fave media go, patay silang lahat. :D) I always watch this during low points in my life. I will not run away...  I will not run away...

Eastern Promises
I blame Cate for this. Russian mafia, bootlegs, severed fingers and tattoos. And, as Cate points out, the very popular bathhouse scene. I'll never look at Aragorn the same way again.

The Devil's Rejects
Woohoo! Rob Zombie splatter-fest! Doesn't rate as high on my to-remember and life-changing meter like Desperado, The Crow, 300 and NGE, it's more on the level of From Dusk Till Dawn. You know, I'll remember the film, but when the audio cd soundtrack plays in my car stereo, it doesn't start a playback of the movie in my mind.  Kumbaga mahina ang connex. But hey, if From Dusk Till Dawn and Dogma (which is also a stroke of genius) had Salma Hayek, The Devil's Rejects has Sheri Moon Zombie (Rob Zombie's better half). Woohoo! My only regret was watching this before watching part one, House of 1000 Corpses.

Drawn Together
Sick, very sick. Tracked down the uncensored eps and scenes not shown on JackTV. Think of all the cartoon characters you grew up with. Now transform them into stereotypes, bigots, racists, incestuous, suicidal, slasher, indecent, manic-depressive, anal-retentive and all tranked up on uppers, viagra, Prozac, roofies, etc. Then stick them in a realityTV-style scenario.

Suicide Club (Jisatsu Saakuru)

Too much blood, as in bumabaha. Imagine 54 girls jumping from a platform onto the path of an oncoming train. That bumabaha bloody. Had me scratching my head after in confusion. There really is no Suicide Club. O_o;;

Tokyo Gore Police (Tôkyô Zankoku Keisatsu)
Hot dang! The directors of Machine girl did a one-up. BDSM + Genetic biopunk! The chainsaws become parts of the engineers rather than mere attachments. If Suicide Club was a blood flood, this is a bloodbath.

Other things queued up for my viewing pleasure:
  1. Audition (Ôdishon) - Another flick I blame Cate for.
  2. House of 1000 Corpses
  3. Attack Girls Swim Team Vs. The Undead (Joshikyôei Hanrangun)
  4. Carved - A Slit Mouthed Woman (Kuchisake-Onna)
  5. Soukou no Strain (Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry) - supposedly it inserts elements from Frances Hodgson Burnett's works like A Little Princess, Little Lord Fauntleroy and The Secret Garden. We'll see.
