Flipspin at Passionfest -Yoyo and Poi

Passionfest held summer workshops for kids of all ages last May 16, 17, May 23 and 24 at the Bonifacio High Street. FlipSpin, the extreme yoyoing club of the Philippines, was part of Hobbes and Landes' exhibit and demo of their skilltoys from the Active People product line.

Active People make the Dark Gem, Triple Action, Flexgap and G-Spin yoyos of the [YO]2 product line. They also have the yoyo-spitop hybrid called the [YO]2 Delta, an offshoot of DocPop's Project 213 from years back. These Active People yoyos are for different skill levels ranging from beginner to professional. Active People also make the Mikido and Kiwido, products from their poi line. The Mikido is the junior version of the Kiwido. They also make the Astrojax, a skilltoy consisting of three balls on a string with the center ball moving freely. The center ball makes for spinning, centrifugal and rotational tricks possible. The Astrojax come in solid bounce rubber or LED light-up variants.

I was supposed to just hang out and take pics, but in true skilltoy demonstrator fashion, fearless FlipSpin leader Edmund volunteered me for an Astrojax demo, which shifted to a Kiwido poi demo mid-program (thanks, Ed. O_o;;, buti na lang natuto ako ng "be prepared for anything and any eventuality" mula sa inyo, hehehe). Though surpised, I found the poi thing quite fun, I got to spin poi with Sir Monching of Planet ZIPS during the product demo.

After that it was hanging out in Bionifacio High Street, dinner at Market, Market, and coffee at Starbucks before heading home. Tiring but fun. Yeah, old man can still spin 'em skilltoys. ^_^

There was some coverage from some newspapers and TV (TV5 and GMA7, I think), dunno when they'll come out.

Passport

I finally found my old passport.

If all goes well, I'll be on a one-week German study tour in July.

I was a bit panicky since I couldn't find my passport. I knew getting a new one would take longer than just renewing the old one. So after turning the house upside-down and my room inside-out, I found it.

All I needed were passport photos. So I went to SM to have some taken. Here they are.

Ampugeh-pugeh, ano?

So does this mean that I have to execute that smile every time I go through immigration?
Papapasukin kaya ako ng Germany? Abangan....

Sirius Blood Debt

It used to look like this a week ago, a PET laminated Yoyojam Sirius.

After adding steel-filled epoxy matador-style pointy nipples (henceforth called "mata-nips" or "perkies"), masking, freestyle acrylic spraying and a second layer of PET lamination, I now have a "Sirius Blood Debt".

You learn something new each day...

I've heard and read about them yet never had the chance to actually see or access one: Toshiba laptops' easy access to hard drives. Had to recover files from my sister and brother-in-law's Toshiba TE2100. I thought I was in for a long tear-down... But, no... All I had to do was remove a screw, pop a small dedicated drive panel, pull, and viola! Out comes the old 30GB 2.5 in. HD.

You learn something new each day...

Doh!

So my nephew Enzo barged into my room at 11pm (yup, he has his tito ninong's bad sleeping habits too) and hands me his Power Rangers Operation Overdrive Megazord. He says something like "Tito Ninong, turn it into a truck."

So I had to turn it from this....

To this...

Yes, nahirapan si Tito Ninong.

I thought it would take me just a minute. I was wrong. My line of thinking was: "Heck, I was able to transform a Voltes 5 from 5 vehicles to one robot when I was young, this will be easy."

It took me 10 minutes. The lack of instructions really did me in.

Quite humbling.

Anyway, he was grateful yet promptly started deconstructing it the second I gave it back.

UPAA-Law Batch '85 Oblation statuettes

I got an email from Ms. Girly Udasco, Special Project Assistant, Office of Atty. Bernadette Juarez.

The email was basically for a fund raising activity of the UPAA-Law Batch '85, they have oblation statuettes available to UP alumni. Most of the content is paraphrased below.

The UPAA-Law Batch '85 commissioned National Artist Napoleon V. Abueva to reproduced Oblation statuettes as part of their 25th year anniversary slated for 2010. Each oblation statuette is 20 inches tall, 3.5 kilos, made of fiberglass and painted with antique bronze finish. This can be personalized by the owner by having his/her name on the included plate.

As part of the Chapter's Centennial Fundraising Campaign, these statuettes are only available and distributed by the Chapter and only limited stock are avaliable.

Details at oblation.com.ph.

BiblioteQ - Open Source Catalog Software and Library Management Suite

http://biblioteq.sourceforge.net/index.html
from the website it says:

"BiblioteQ strives to be a complete and thorough library management suite. The application is supported on numerous platforms, including FreeBSD, Linux, OS X, Solaris and Windows. Installers are available for OS X and Windows.

For some categories, BiblioteQ provides a mechanism for querying the Library of Congress, or any other Z39.50-capable system, via the standard Z39.50 protocol; thus simplifying the data-entry process.

As for database support, BiblioteQ allows for connectivity to both PostgreSQL and SQLite database engines. "

Will give this a whirl.

Kung Fu Panda Mural

Simple 1 1/2 hour mural of Po from Kung Fu Panda.

One newly painted garage wall... Mom had it painted for our school's summer workshop sessions. I promised that I would paint something on it. So, I decided, why not paint something my nephews also loved? Enter Po, the Kung Fu Panda 1 1/2 hours later.

From this...

To this...

Materials? 6 cans pylox acrylic, small paintbrush, duct tape, sheets of paper for masking. Need more practice... Been some time since I painted a wall.

SLIS applications results

Accepted applicants to the BLIS and MLIS programs, AY 09-10.

Yoyo PET plastic outer coat / shielding

Hello.
Been years since my last mod post.

Anyway, this stems from a talk with the Southern Revolution guys many years ago (2005? 2006?). Pres was deep in the throes of response systems. Ghe wanted to experiment with tin, aluminum or lead (tinga) moulding. I wanted to try out plastic melts. Never had the chance, until now.

One of my plans was to melt plastic to form yoyos (coat hangers, PET bottles). Well, after some research, the DIY process would be too toxic or impossible for residential areas. Maybe plastic mould injections would be next in my list.

So temporarily I settle for this, Yoyo PET plastic outer coat / shielding. Been toying with this idea but I saw that melting it with candles is hard given the uneven heat. Also the plastic darkens because of the soot. So I had to wait till I had moolah for a heat gun. (Note: I was surprised that this process was also used for making artificial limbs for landmine victims: http://www.instructables.com/id/Plastic_So...tle_Prosthesis/) Note that I think a similar process was used to coat / protect the paper graphics on some old FH2s.

USES for Yoyo PET plastic outer coat / shielding:
1. provides rigid support for broken / cracked plastic yoyos
2. serves as protection film for new metal or plastic yoyos

Materials:
1. Yoyo halves
2. 2 PET bottles (identical), for this I used two Cobra Energy Drink bottles (quite indicative of my nocturnal work habits of late)
3. Heat gun (or open flame, like stove top, might work but I haven't tried it)
4. X-acto / hobby knives (normal bookstore cutters won't do, they may break)

Simple Steps:
1. Cut funnel shape from top half of PET bottles. (Probably works with the cylinder side, but I liked the funnel shape since it means less work to mould it around the yoyo.Plus the bottle cap gave me a natural holder.)
2. Place yoyo half inside funnel.
3. Apply gradual heat using heat gun to slowly mold PET around yoyo half.
4. When PET plastic has already moulded to the shape of yoyo halves, trim and sand off excess PET Plastic.

DONE.jpg

CAUTIONARY NOTES AND OTHER STUFF:
1. PET in PET plastic, stands for polyethylene terephthalate. Plastic may give off toxic fumes when intense heat is applied to melt it. I had to work in my room but made sure it was well-ventilated. (Chem and materials science guys correct me, am not sure on this.)
2. Be careful with the Heat Gun. Not only is it very, very hot (I found out the hard way), it's also a fire hazzard.
3. The heated PET plastic may also bond with the yoyo plastic. I tried it on my very old Minimo and I think some of the parts have stuck to the old yoyojam plastic.
4. The heat-treated yoyo is also very hot! Be careful when handling!
5. The additional PET layer adds weight to the yoyo. I found Minimos light, but after the PET coat and a quick throw, I found out it was a slightly heavier play.
6. I was probably just lucky on my first try. But I would think that uneven heating would cause uneven moulding and would affect the stability of the old yoyo.
7. Over-burning / over-heating causes the PET plastic to burn, bubble, lose transparency and be brittle. So be careful with that one.
8. Wrong heating melts not only the PET but also the yoyo plastic.
9. The heated PET plastic is soft, it hardens after a while. And the resulting moulded plastic is harder and tougher to cut than when it was in the original form it was in.

Now... If I could have one of Preslie's Acrylic paint jobs / coats before I PET coat / shield... Hmmmm....

I'm currently trying to mould hubstacks, key grips, cellphone casings, etc. But am not holding my breath for those.
